Living in Mérida: The Best Things to Do Like a Local

Introduction: After 15 years of living in Mérida, Yucatán, I can say that this city has a special charm that you won't find anywhere else. Here’s a list of my favorite things to do, based on everyday life and not the tourist trail.

Breakfast at the Mercado de Santiago

  • There's nothing better to start the day than a good breakfast at the Mercado de Santiago. The atmosphere is bustling and authentic, and you can enjoy some huevos motuleños at "La Lupita," a classic spot. While you eat, you can watch how the locals start their day, something you don't see in the big tourist restaurants.

Walk in Parque de las Américas

  • Parque de las Américas is a perfect place to spend the afternoon. This park is not just a place to walk but a cultural meeting point. On weekends, there are often cultural events and free concerts. Additionally, the park's architecture, with its Mayan influence, is fascinating.

Coffee and Culture at La Fundación Mezcalería

  • For an afternoon of coffee and culture, visit La Fundación Mezcalería. During the day, it's an ideal place to work or relax with a good book. At night, it transforms into a vibrant space with live music and cultural events. It's an excellent place to meet locals and learn more about Mérida's culture.

Sunday Bike Rides on Paseo de Montejo

  • Every Sunday, Paseo de Montejo is closed to traffic for the "BiciRuta." It's a perfect opportunity to bike down Mérida's main avenue, enjoying the scenery and colonial architecture. Additionally, along the route, there are food stalls and local crafts.

Exploring the Cenotes of Homún

  • Unlike the more touristy cenotes, the cenotes of Homún are a hidden gem. They are ideal for a weekend adventure. You can rent a motorcycle or a car and explore several cenotes in one day. Some of my favorites are Cenote Tza Ujun Kat and Cenote Yaxbacaltún.

Yucatecan Cooking Classes

  • One of the best ways to understand a culture is through its food. Taking a Yucatecan cooking class is an incredible experience.

Eating at Wayan’e

  • You can't say you know Mérida if you haven't tried the tacos from Wayan’e. This place is a local institution. My recommendation is to go in the morning and order some tacos de castacán (pork belly). You won't be disappointed.

There are many ways to immerse yourself in the authentic Yucatecan life. If you’re thinking about moving or just want to learn more about this wonderful city, I hope these tips help you see Mérida with new eyes. Enjoy and live Mérida like a true local!
