The burn of the last year is tradition very important for Mexicans which consists in burning a doll made of old close, paperboard and sawdust. However now there lost variables of these traditions. Nowadays some people has substituted the traditional old man figure for political and celebrities figures. Some of the lucky are ex presidents Carlos Salinas de Gortari, Vicente Fox Quesada and ex Governor Ivonne Ortega Pacheco.

The doll is full with fireworks and its light up at midnight of December 31. With this people expects to leave the year that pasted behind and with it all the bad luck and energy, at the same time give way to celebration and welcome the New Year.

Days before El Viejo is burn families get together to made the doll and usually displayed it outside their house where at the end of the year family and neighbors watch El Viejo burn.

“Quema del Viejo”

La quema del año viejo es una tradición muy arraigada en los mexicanos que consiste en la quema de un muñeco hecho tradicionalmente de ropa vieja, cartón y aserrín sin embargo ya existen muchas variables de esta costumbre. El muñeco se rellena con bombitas y fuegos pirotécnicos, y es encendido a la media noche del 31 de diciembre.  Con esto se busca dejar atrás el año que termina y con él toda la mala suerte o malas energías, para a su vez dar paso a la celebración y bienvenida del año que comienza.

Días antes de la quema de El Viejo las familias se reúnen a hacerlo y generalmente lo exhiben fuera de su casa donde al finalizar el año la familia y vecinos se reunirán para presenciar la quema del año viejo.

Actualmente muchas personas han sustituido la tradicional figura de un viejo y han optado por representar el año viejo con figuras de políticos o celebridades. Entre los afortunados y más populares encontramos los expresidentes Carlos Salinas de Gortari, Vicente Fox Quesada y la exgobernadora Ivonne Ortega Pacheco.
